Online School?

The state department of education has provided funding for an experimental online school. All of the classes will take place on the internet using email,online chat, and the world wide wed. The students taking classes at this new online school will never meet each other face-to-face . Do you think that 6th,7th,and 8th grade students should or shouldn't attend school online.

Reply:We have a business in a group of factories - in one of the factories is a 10 year old who is home schooled - he is a nice kid but has no idea how to behave like a 10 year old - sometimes he acts more like a 5 year old - he has a vivid imagination and acts out all kinds of rolls - Im not sure what he is doing but sometimes it looks like he is pretending to be a cow boy as he is running around in a circle making arm actions like he is going to throw a lasso - his mother is worried that he doesnt know how to interact with other children as he only ever hangs around us adults when we are at work - his father on the other hand doesnt agree with conventional schooling - he sets his son daily tasks or subjects that he has to research on the net and thats it the rest of the day is his to fill on his own.. I think its sad .. if his mother gets her way and he is sent to school you can just tell he will be singled out and teased.





So no I dont agree with net home schooling - I guess with the program your talking about there will at least be some structure to it unlike this child has but I still think kids need to learn how to behave and interact around other kids.
Reply:I did school online for my 8th grade year and even though you're at home and able to listen to music or whatever while doing school, I wouldn't recommend it. It was easy for me to get into a website and forget about it and hard for me to concentrate on a computer screen for so long. I didn't understand the material, especially math, that well and actually had to redo that year of math because I was so lost and confused. Overall I say, stick to the books.
Reply:i think that they shouldn't attend an online school...the fact that we go to school also helps us learn to socialize...how to work with different types of people...how to do teamwork and stuff like that. if we don't get to meet anyone in particular face to face, that practice won't be put so much in to practice.

Which curriculum will this school use - I assume K12 (virtual academies) or Calvert (Connections Academy)? I've used K12 as an independent HS'er for my son for over 4 years and it is an *awesome* curriculum - especially in the middle school years.





Most virtual schools do have some "meet and greet" opportunities for students. They can also meet via virtual whiteboards. In addition, you can meet other HS students from local groups.





This is a great option for many. So if it fits the family and student dynamic, it can be a *wonderful* experience.
